Sample One-Day Itinerary

If you only have one day to spend in our community, then we recommend the following itinerary for your visit:

An outstanding historic home tour awaits you in downtown Danville at the McDowell House & Apothecary, where you'll learn the fascinating story of the world's first abdominal surgery, performed by Dr. Ephraim McDowell. Across the street you will want to wander through Constitution Square State Historic Site, and visit the Wilderness Trace Art League and The Historic Society Museum. See the original building that was the first U.S. Post Office west of the Allegheny Mountains, and visit log cabin displays.

In beautiful downtown Danville, you'll want to stop by the Danville Historic Antique Mall and Fabric Unlimited, as well as other specialty and gallery shops located along Main Street. You'll also want to visit Chateau du Viexu Corbeau Winery at Old Crow Inn to sample an array of locally produced wines and to peruse the handmade gifts and crafts at Elements Pottery Studio.

Before you visit some of our other must-see sites, take a quick drive past fine examples of architectural styles: Victorian homes, restored Classic Greek Revival buildings at Centre College, and Italianate Jacobs Hall at the Kentucky School for the Deaf. Our Historic Walking-Driving Tour map is available in the Maps section of this site.

In addition, if you're interested in agricultural tourism-organic farming, U-pick vegetables or fruit, homegrown produce, or tours of internationally-known farms and mills-we invite you to read more about our local agri-tourism efforts in agri-tourism section of this site. You'll find that Boyle County is beautiful with its rolling hills, rock-wall fences and many working farms.

In Perryville, you'll discover Merchant's Row, alongside the Chaplin River. With numerous restoration efforts in progress, you'll find original 1840s structures that once housed a drug store, a general store and an opera house. Be sure to check out the local shops along Merchant's Row before driving out to the Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site, home to Kentucky's bloodiest Civil War battle.

Before returning to Danville, enjoy a visit to Penn's Store, the oldest country store in America still operated by the same family. Penn's is sure to charm you with its authentic country appeal. You'll also enjoy our scenic back roads.

From mid-June through late August, take in dinner and an award-winning performance at Pioneer Playhouse Outdoor Dinner Theatre. There also are special performances year-round at West T. Hill Community Theatre or Norton Center for the Arts at Centre College.

Complete your visit with a stay in one of our historic bed and breakfasts or comfortable hotels. You also may want to enjoy one of the floating cabins at Gwinn Island Resort and Marina on Herrington Lake.

Sample Two-Day Itinerary of the Area

If you have two days to spend in our community, we recommend adding the following sites to the one-day itinerary:

Before leaving downtown Danville, pick up a walking/driving tour brochure, which highlights the six historic districts in Danville, including Beaten Biscuit Row, our national award-winning Main Street, St. Mildred's Court, East Main Street, Maple Street, Lexington Avenue, and the warehouse districts.

Trinity Episcopal Church, McDowell House and Apothecary, and the historic Boyle County Courthouse are also stops on this tour.

You'll enjoy successful blends of historic styles and new additions at the Presbyterian Church and the Boyle County Library.

Be sure to stop in to Jacobs Hall Museum at Kentucky School for the Deaf to see their historical re-creation of an 1850s student dorm and classroom. The museum also offers a video for visitors and a gift shop.

Drive or walk historic West Broadway, Lexington and Maple Avenues with the walking/driving tour brochure, and keep it handy as you continue on to Centre College. On weekends, stop in and visit our J. F. C. Mineral and Fossil Museum.

If your passion is Civil War history, contact the Perryville Battlefield Preservation Association for a closer look at efforts to preserve this important battlefield site and the surrounding area. Walk the seven miles of the new interpretive trails at the Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site, just 10 miles west of Danville off Highway 150. You also may want to get a copy of A Civil War Trail brochure for Danville and Perryville, and visit the sites listed.

If you want to be more physically active, play a round of golf at Old Bridge Golf Club, our 18-hole course on Lake Herrington, or hike the nature trails at the Central Kentucky Wildlife Center. Or enjoy one of the floating cabins at Gwinn Island Resort and Marina, and enjoy some first-class fishing. At Danville Bike and Fitness on Main Street in Danville, you can find out when a group will be out for a jog, run or ride. Visitors of any age are always welcome to join in with this group of active fitness enthusiasts.

At Centre College, you'll discover the Jones Visual Art Center, featuring work by internationally acclaimed hot glass artist Stephen Rolfe Powell and incredible pastel paintings by Sheldon Tapley. There are numerous rotating exhibitions, as well.
