• Boyle By Bike: Cycling in Danville, Kentucky

Our little neck of the woods should really be called “our little neck of the roads;” rolling, twisting, bursting with beautiful vistas of field and farmland, our back roads are part of what make Danville and Boyle County unique. Danville is home to a vibrant and growing bicycling community, making it the perfect place to pedal to your heart’s content. If you’re going to be cycling in or around our area, you’ll want to check out the following.

    Bluegrass Pike Out-and-Back

bluegrasspike danvillekyIf you’re looking for a moderately challenging scenic route, head west on 150/Perryville Road and take a right turn down Bluegrass Pike (right). This beautiful bunch of blacktop rolls through dry-stone fenced farmland and fields with a few good hills thrown in. The pike is a popular spot for runners and cyclists, so you’ll probably see fellow fitness aficionados while you’re out. Feeling frisky? You can head all the way to the end of the pike for a 22-mile out and back. Not quite up to that distance? No sweat. The nice thing about out-and-backs is that you can turn around whenever you feel like it!

    2168 Connector Trail

2168traildanvillekyAs our newest section of mixed-use trail, the 2168 connector trail (left) is a great choice for beginning bikers; it has parking areas at both ends of the trail so you can park and ride, and it’s separated from Route 2168, so you don’t have to worry about staying out of traffic. The best part? It winds through rolling Kentucky farmland as far as the eye can see. And the relatively short round-trip distance (about 3 miles) makes it ideal for a quick spin with little ones or beginners. Be warned, though: it’s got some serious hills!

    Weekly group rides

groupride3Our local bike shop, Danville Bike and Footwear, hosts weekly group rides that leave from the shop every Wednesday evening at about 6 p.m., weather permitting. If you happen to be in town mid-week, you’re always welcome to jump in with some locals, who know all the best back roads. For more inexperienced cyclists, it can be nice to tag along with a group for navigational, conversational, or repair purposes! Check out the shop’s website for details on this and other group fitness activities you can partake in. They’re also happy to give advice and guidance on places to ride in the area and can point you to routes of whichever distance and difficulty you’re seeking.
